How do I get started?
-
Apply for an Amazon Associate ID
The first thing you should do is apply for an Amazon Associate ID from the Amazon Associates Program. Note that there is a separate Amazon Associates program for each country that Amazon operates from. For most of our users this will be Amazon Associates based in the United States. For an Amazon Associate ID for other countries, please visit the appropriate Amazon country site:- Amazon Associates USA
- Amazon Associates Canada
- Amazon Associates France
- Amazon Associates UK
- Amazon Associates Germany
- Amazon Associates Japan
Amazon will require various personal information, a web site profile (more on this later), as well as way to pay you when you earn money for referring customers to Amazon who make purchases.
Payee & Website Profile Information
The first part of the Amazon Associates application asks about you (the payee) and your website. You're free to describe your own website, blog, MySpace, etc. in this section. Here's an example Web Site Profile:
What is the name of your Web site? What is the URL of the main Web site you use to send traffic to Amazon? Which of the following topics best describes your main Web site? Briefly describe your site, including the type of items you intend to list. Primary method for generating referrals Specifying Payment Method
Part two of the application involves specifying the payment method you wish to receive your referral earnings from Amazon. The payment methods include Amazon Gift Certificates, direct deposit to a bank account, or by check. You may change the way Amazon pays you at any time so choose Amazon Gift Certificates if you don't have your banking information handy. You'll have plenty of time to change this before your first payment so don't stress over this step nor let it stop you from completing the forms. -
Use your Amazon Associate ID at Z Book Club
Once you've completed your application, Amazon will display your Associate ID and also send the Associate ID by email. Once you receive this you're ready to start using your Associate ID at Z Book Club. Login to your Z Book Club account or create an account if you don't already have one (remember to complete your Z Book Club account creation by following the activation link we email you!). Once you're logged in, click on the Edit Profile link at the top right hand side of the page (note: you must be logged in to edit your profile - your email address will be shown if you're logged in).
Now you should be on the Edit Profile page. Near the bottom left hand corner is a field named: Amazon Associate ID.
Find this field and type (or cut and paste) your Amazon Associate ID into this field exactly as it was sent to you by Amazon (in the confirmation email you received after signing up for the Amazon Associates Program). The format of an Amazon Associate ID is like the following: jasonblog-20. Click Update to save your Associate ID to your user profile and now you're ready to start promoting your book clubs or create some book clubs on Z Book Club if you haven't already.

Create Book Clubs at Z Book Club
Now that you've got your Associate ID saved to your profile, it's time to create some book clubs with your account. Return to the home page to start your internet book club by searching for a book that you're interested in discussing. After selecting your book from the search results, add a message to start the club. Your message can be anything: a welcome message, a short book review, a question about a character or a plot item.
Only book clubs created under your Z Book Club account will have your Amazon Associate ID attached to it so it's important that you actually post the first message to start the book club. You'll see the heading Club Discussion with your first message underneath after you've started your book club.
Look at the link named Find at Amazon just below the cover photo. This link contains your Associate ID, which is your ticket to Amazon Associate revenues. Whenever users click this link to arrive at Amazon and they make a qualifying purchase, you earn money from Amazon for the referral. It's that easy. To check that your Associate ID is active in the link, hover your mouse over the link and check for your Associate ID in the link within the Status Bar at the bottom of your browser window. In Firefox the Status Bar is on by default. In Internet Explorer you must turn on your Status Bar within the File Menu by clicking View, then checking on the Status Bar.
In the picture below the "Find at Amazon" link is hovered over with the mouse pointer, causing the Status Bar to show the underlying Amazon link which contains the Associate ID key "tag=jasonblog-20". The "jasonblog-20" is the Associate ID in this example. This is what you're looking for, but it should show your Amazon Associate ID, not "jasonblog-20".

Promote Your Book Clubs!
Now with your Associate ID active in your Z Book Club account and you have an online internet book club started, it's time to let people know that your online internet book club is active.
We help you do this with blog widgets that you can copy and paste into your blog or website. Look for the Blog this club... link on each book club you have with us. This link opens up a window with code you can cut and paste onto your website, along with a preview of what you'll get when you do.
Apply this code to your website, your blog, your MySpace, wherever you can to increase the visibility of your online internet book club and to let people know that your book club is up and running. The more people you get to visit your online internet book clubs, the greater your earning potential through the Amazon Associates Program. Don't forget to submit your website or blog to all of the search engines and web crawlers that you can. This will increase the reach of your web site and increase the number of eager book buying customers you send to Amazon. Also, use the social bookmark buttons at the bottom of each book club. These buttons link your book club directly to the hottest online social bookmarking sites getting you even more exposure. Best of luck.
