I'm Being Stalked by a Moonshadow
by Doug MacLeod
I wonder if MacLeod is taking a jab at conservatives by lumping them and alcoholics in the same pool. He would seem to be insinuating that the liberal (i.e. Australian conservatives) are a group who cannot control their internal desires of excess, escapism, and over-indulgence.
Re the question: How does I’m Being Stalked by a Moonshadow reveal Doug MacLeod’s own perspectives about people and the world? For a lively discussion, describe why you think Doug MacLeod is liberal or conservative.
There is a line in the book where Seth mentions that he is allowed to drink wine with his parents, provided he does not become an alcoholic or a Liberal voter. It is important for American readers to realize that in Australia, the traditionally conservative federal party is known as The Liberal Party. The equivalent in the US would be The Republicans. Seth’s father is undoubtedly a Labor (US = Democrat) voter.
